Ondo : Sports Helps In Developing Learner’s Minds.

The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board–SUBEB, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, has said sports helps in developing learner’s minds. He disclosed this today being the 5th of July at the state Finals of the Basic Education School Sport Competition held at St Thomas Aquinas College, Akure.
Olabimtan, who said the introduction of sports early into the life of learners helps in developing their cognitive, affective and psycho motor skills with a view to sharpen their intellectual minds. According to him, the programme is a joint event between Universal Basic Education Commission — UBEC and SUBEB across the Nation was meant to harness the potentials of learners, develop their skills at this level, for self sustainance and to serve as bedrock for the Nation’s sport development .
In another development, Olabimtan said, “Basic Education Schools Sport ( BESS) is the foundation programme developed to catch them Young” . He said the event would avail the learner’s an all round and robust development, promote the maxim of a ” sound mind in a sound body” reduce restiveness and indiscipline among learners, inculcate the intrisic value of sportmanship, teamwork and fair play, foster National unity among learners through interaction and friendly sporting activities “.
He explained that sport materials has been given to some basic schools for the year 2020 Sports Development, while another set of basic Schools will be given for the year 2021 and 2022 very soon.
The competition which featured field events like high jump, football match between Ondo team and Owo of which Owo football team defeated their opponent with two goals to nil. While track events include one hundred, two hundred, four hundred metres and relay race.
Other event includes March pass. The whole groups were divided into five zones across the State. They were Owo, Okitipupa, Ondo, Akoko and Akure zone and it featured both Boys and Girls from the zones.
In the long run, the team from Akoko zone took first in the overall sporting activities that took place in the competition and this made them received a championship trophy and other medals.
Dignitaries that graced the event were Head of Services, pastor Kayode Ogundele, Lola Amuda, who is the Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Diaspora and Regional planning and host of others.
Ondo: Sports Is An Encouraging Thing Among Pupils–Pst Ogundele

Ondo State Head of Service, Pastor Kayode Ogundele has eulogized the efforts of the State Universal Basic Education Commission — SUBEB in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission — UBEC in putting together sports competition among the Primary Schools across the Nation particularly in Ondo State for the purpose of identify and also for the development of talents among the pupils.
He said Sport is an encouraging thing among the pupils in the Primary Schools.
In his words “once we are able to sustain this, Nigeria will be a sporting nation to be recognised within all spheres. He explained that jn the past we had always been talking about football, but with this now we can see that these kids could perform well in all areas of sports and this is what SUBEB is trying to encourage, which is very nice and that is why I have to spare time to be here today to join my voice with that of the SUBEB so that the future of the State as well as the future of the nation will help them combine sport with their academics, so that they can succeed and also excell in both sports and their academics .”
The Head of Service spoke about Sports and the Economy as a way of revenue generation. He was of the opinion that a lots of foreign exchange that comes to Nigeria in time of sports activities can not be underestimated. He said there lots of our Boys and Girls involving in different sporting activities where they are making their marks and making money in sports .
He believed that sports can also be a veritable source of revenue generation. He said ” countries like United Kingdom, (English leagues, Spanish leagues and Italian leagues ) all these examples are countries where they are making the best from football as well as other sporting activities and if we can be able to get our house together like we are doing now, Nigeria will get there.”
ONDO STATE UBEC COORDINATOR
In the opinion of Mrs Olanike Oladunni Adams, the State Coordinator of UBEC, said the idea behind the competition was just to ensure that education is all you encompassing. She said the whole states of the UBEC decided to put the competition together to encourage these young ones who may have interest in sports to developing their sychys, so that it’s not only in reading and classroom as there are stars in the field and we want to develop their skills , talents and catching them young at the Universal Basic Education levels.
Also, Adenike believed that this kind of competition would spur them to become whatever they want to become in life since most of them are watching football .
She said in Nigeria , we only believed in the classroom only where we like our children to become Medical Doctors, Engineers and host of others where as in the Western words , we have the footballers and others in the field that are making more money .
She said this type of competition would help the learner’s to develop their skills and talents in future as they are passionate about the competition and determined in displaying their skills in the field and this would really help the learners.
